What is Manual Therapy?
“To touch is to give life”, Michelangelo.
Manual therapy is performed by highly trained providers to determine the areas of tension in the body that are the primary drivers (the cause) of pain or dysfunction. A manual therapist uses their skill set to ensure they are treating the cause rather than relying on a theoretical model that may explain symptoms.
‘Manual Therapy’ encompasses a broad group of sophisticated and very precisely performed techniques including mobilizations or manipulations and refers to hands-on treatment of the body and it’s tissues. The tissues can be fascia, viscera, neurovascular and/or connective tissue. The emphasis of Manual Therapy is to address the source of pain, improve mobility, dissipate the negative effects of stress, enhance the musculoskeletal system through connective tissue attachments, influence general metabolism, and increase function.
Medical care has shifted over the years due to the advances in technology. Machines and devices are regularly utilized to detect, monitor, determine, identify, and treat yielding the perception that healthcare is less personal or hands-on. Renew Manual Physical Therapy prides itself on a more integrative, holistic, and intimate approach to your health and wellness that produces results.
WHO IS A MANUAL THERAPIST?
Not all are created equal! There are numerous modalities that offer hands-on care, such as physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage therapy, however, the level of skill and depth of knowledge varies significantly. Numerous advanced training programs exist, and the extent of clinical experience as well as the breadth of understanding of the human body and it’s systems are crucial. An integrative practitioner will offer the greatest likelihood of positive results.
WHY MANUAL THERAPY?
The answer is quite simple – it’s proven to improve your quality of life and health.
Hands-on care combined with movement and education results in a positive patient response and outcome. This leads to faster recovery, decreased chance of relapse, and less out-of-pocket expenses. Research shows manual therapy when compared to traditional physical therapy yields fewer visits. (Ann Inter Med. 2002: 136:713-722)
